As it approaches the end of the summer, we still want to make the most of the sunny days we have left, but to be honest, we’re getting a bit bored of the same old BBQ. There are only so many times we can have a burger, or a hotdog. So here’s a list of a few more unusual things to BBQ, to help reinvigorate the last few sunny days.
If you’re vegetarian, it’s very likely you’ve eaten a few halloumi kebabs over the summer, as it seems to be the go to BBQ veggie option. So why not swap that grilled halloumi for some tofu? Make sure you slice the tofu nice and thick so that it doesn’t fall apart on the grill, and marinade it (preferably overnight). Then drain that marinade off, and grill the tofu. Delicious.
It’s everyone’s favourite food, now with a fancy new twist. Sticking your pizza on the BBQ can give it a similar flavor to pizza that is cooked in a fancy wood-burning oven. If you’re feeling extra fancy, why not try making the pizza from scratch, with your own home made pizza dough and fresh toppings.

A grilled watermelon salad might sound horribly sickly and sweet, but once the watermelon is grilled, it becomes slightly ‘meatier’ and loses some of the sweetness to make it a refreshing addition to salsas or salads.
Simply cut the watermelon into wedges and sprinkle them with salt, then leave them to drain. They should be almost completely dry. Brush them lightly with olive oil and then grill them. Once grilled, slice into slightly more manageable pieces and toss with your salad leaves; such as rocket, baby gem or chicory.
This is the slightly weirder end of the spectrum, but definitely worth a go. Your local fish monger might have these frozen, or they can probably order one in for you. They’ll usually be cleaned and ready to be cooked, but definitely check before you stick it on the grill.
Tenderize the octopus for about 15 minutes before hand, making sure you baste it as it cooks. It should take anywhere between 10-25 minutes to cook, and when you feel a slight push back on the knife, it’s ready to eat. You and quite a few friends are in for a treat.
It can be hard to get a good side to go with your delicious kebabs (or octopus!) but the hugely versatile avocado can help with that. Once it’s cut in half and had the stone removed, grill it face down and then top with salsa or a tasty vinaigrette for an easy, delicious summery side.
