Wherever you live in the UK, you are never more than
80 miles from the coast.

Our beautiful beaches and sparkling seas are places of joy, adventure, and relaxation - from building sandcastles and spotting wildlife to enjoying a refreshing swim. But litter and plastic pollution is a big problem that spoils our beaches and oceans. Each year, approximately 11 million metric tons of plastics flow into the ocean from beaches and land-based sources alone. Small actions can make a big difference. Every bottle, every straw, and every piece of rubbish you clean up can lead to a cleaner, healthier beach and ocean.

What is The Great British Beach Clean?

Every year for one week in September the Marine Conservation Society runs a nationwide campaign to clean up our beaches. Not only are you helping the environment and making the beaches a nicer place to visit, but the litter data collected on beach cleans drives the MCS’s conservation work. The data collected so far has positively impacted our oceans - including introducing the plastic bag charge, banning microplastics in personal care products, clearer wet wipe labelling, and supporting a tax on single-use plastic items.*

Get involved!

The Great British Beach Clean is running from Friday 20th to Sunday 29th of September 2024, but keeping our beaches clean is a fun activity you can do with the family any time of the year. It’s the perfect chance to spend quality time with your loved ones while doing something great for the planet. Organise a beach clean hunt with the grandkids and let the family pooch help too, everyone can get in on the action! Or check out other beach cleaning events held throughout the year.
