The Breton Stripe

The Breton Stripe is synonymous with many classic moments of history.

Originating in the French Navy, the original 1860s Breton Stripe had a boat neck and 29 stripes for each of Napolean’s victories.

Since then we’ve seen it have many moments of movie fame.

On the catwalk, Coco Chanel brought it back to life along with the beret, becoming a key French fashion staple in the 1920s.

You most likely associate a slinky black dress and a cigarette holder with Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast in Tiffany’s, but she also wore the classic Breton Strip and perfect plaited hair bun when dressing down. Plus, Jean Seberg gave it a definite French edge in the 1960s in Breathless.

And who can forget John Paul Gaultier taking it to a whole new level, using the classic stripe as an integral part of his famous French brand in the 90s, which still exists today. Apparently, he insists his entire PR team all wear the Breton stripe during his shows.
