Smart-casual? Don’t worry, we’ve got you!

06 Dec 2016

Party season is very close, and you know what that means? The puzzling “smart-casual” dress code. Dreaded by even the most informed and inventive style maven, the paradoxical smart-casual dress code can be an incredibly hard nut to crack.

Many are flummoxed by what it actually means. How can a look be both “smart” and “casual” when the two approaches are poles apart? Think smarter than a tracksuit, but less formal than a suit. Helpful? No, perhaps not!

Nailing the smart-casual look depends upon adhering to a few, simple “rules”, but at the same time thinking freely and going with the flow – yes, we know, the confusion deepens!

Bear with us, it will all become clear!

The Basics

  • Keep things balanced. Team jeans with a smart, Oxford shirt and a blazer. Likewise, tailored trousers can be tempered by a fresh, clean pair of sneakers.
  • If in doubt, always look “overdressed” rather than “underdressed”.
  • Be yourself – a look devoid of personality is never a good look.
  • Always consider the weather – dressing for the height of summer whilst in the cold clutches of the bleak midwinter is never stylish.
  • Never consider flip-flops. Ever. Even when it’s warm.
  • Try not to stress over getting it “right”. An overthought look defeats the purpose.
  • Enlist the help of a female- women always know best!

Perhaps the most pertinent piece of advice we can offer on this subject is always consider the context in which the smart-casual look is required. Going “smart-casual” for a festive soiree is very different from “smart-casual” for an important work meeting. Faced with these two very different scenarios, the basics ought to be remembered, but interpreted accordingly.

So, what pieces are absolutely essential when building successful and stylish, smart-casual outfits?

A quality, great-fitting pair of jeans

The cornerstone of many a groomed, yet relaxed outfit. Always source a superb pair in a deep, dark wash. Forget anything ripped, distressed or embellished. Plain and simple is best.

A classic, Oxford shirt

Refined, yet sporty, a beautifully cut, great-fitting Oxford in a fresh, understated shade is the perfect blank canvas to build upon. A button-down collar means you can look smart with or without a tie.

Great shoes

Perhaps the most important part of the formula, in terms of defining how smart your smart-casual outfit is going to be.

Essential within your arsenal are a good pair of Chelsea boots (preferably in tan or brown) and/or a classic pair of loafers. Tassels are optional.

A smart, austere pair of sneakers in white are also handy to have, but these ought to be reserved for pairing only with smarter separates. This type of footwear should always be fresh and clean looking.

A versatile blazer

Jacket wise, a blazer is best. Opt for something simple and unfussy, preferably crafted in quality, textured wool. It should be easy to wear, pairing effortlessly with both denim and trousers.

Classic knitwear

Simple, colourful knits in superb, all-natural yarns are forever stylish. A pure cashmere crew neck jumper elevates even the most run-of-the-mill outfit, and a 100% Merino V neck jumper is perfect for all-year-round layering.
