Natural wool fibre contains nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon as well as sulphur. Wool naturally has serrated fibres, which makes it possible for the threads to stick together, creating an insulated textile. Hence, it tends to be warmer than other fabrics, as well as more flexible, lighter, biodegradable, fire resistant and a good cloth to wear even in wet weather conditions. We want to deliver the best quality wools for you.
But how do we measure the quality of our wool?
Wool fibre is measured in micron, or micrometre. The lower the micron measurement, the finer the fibres. There are many ways to measure wool samples, including Optical Fibre Diameter Analysis tools, or mobile devices called Fleecescan. Once collected, the samples are then sent to fleece-testing laboratories for measurement. The test results then determine the best use and value for wools. Usually, wool between 10 and 24 microns in fibre diameter is made into clothes.
The quality of wool can be altered by many outside factors and can greatly vary depending on the age, health and nutrition of sheep. Those conditions also very much depend on the level of general care shown by breeders. Weather conditions can have an impact on wool quality too, such as cold weather constructing harder and heavier fibres, whilst excessive moisture dries out natural grease. Finally, the timing of fleece is also important. While a lamb’s first fleece provides softer fabric, using wool fibres from dead sheep will result in inferior quality products.
Merino wool is commonly considered among the best quality wools. The Merino is a sheep breed, which originates from Turkey and Spain, and needs to be shorn at least once a year because of its quick coat growth pattern. Merino wool fibres are strong and elastic, between 1 to 5 inches in length. Compared to other types of wools, Merino has a huge amount of crimp and number of fibres. Thus, it produces warmer and more flexible clothes, which is why it’s widely used for manufacturing.
