Wraps, shawls, ponchos, capes, shrugs and boleros

We’re reaching for the cover ups, but when it comes to wraps, shawls, ponchos, capes, boleros and shrugs, it’s a minefield and what is the difference?

Capes

Capes aren’t just for superheroes. A cape typically fastens around the neck, with a collar and doesn’t have any sleeves, or might have a very loose fitting cut giving the impression of a loose sleeve.

Longer styles are popular with men (and detectives) with shorter more glamorous styles often worn by women to compliment an evening gown without impacting too much on the overall dress.

Ponchos

In its simplest form, a poncho is a rain-proof square of heavy yarn with an opening for the head. Traditionally worn in Spanish speaking countries, they are still popular with South American farmers in the Andes or the odd festival goer…

Shrugs

Boleros

A bolero is a bit like a posh shrug, it has a similar purpose in covering up the top of the arms, but is often fancier. Can be made of lace, fake fur or tailored to match a dress, they generally partner with a posh frock for a special event.

Wraps

You remember the days when everyone had a pashmina? Pashminas are wraps made from a certain type of cashmere, but in general all wraps tend to be quite large like a super large scarf, that doesn’t have sleeves.

Shawls

Originating from India, a shawl is similar to a wrap that drapes over the shoulders, but tends to have more shape and detail. It may be curved, have intricate tassels or embroidery and generally be much lighter in weight so it can be draped over the head as well.
