Tips for a proper staycation

22 Jul 2016

Going on a summer holiday is something we look forward to for months and dream of when it’s raining. But, if you’re unable to get away to sunnier places this year, you can still fake it at home by giving yourself a proper break and doing things a bit differently.

Don’t treat it like a normal week – save up like you normally would, so you have some proper time and space away from the normal family routine.

No matter where you live in the UK you are never too far away from water. Whether that’s a lido in London or over to the coast, so a trip to the beach is a must, along with visiting a local farm or somewhere with animals or just a really good walk. But, what do you do if the weather isn’t very beach friendly?

Turn off your phone

Pretend you’re in the middle of nowhere and turn off your phone so you can focus on your friends or family. Whether you’re at home or somewhere else, a family holiday will be vastly improved by switching off your phones or limiting tech usage. Set some simple rules, like not having phones at mealtimes or no phones after 4pm.

Camping at Home

Get the tent out or borrow one from somebody else and camp out in the back garden. The kids will love it and you can always skip back indoors when you need the loo, rather than having to cope with the normal communal washrooms. Get the BBQ out as well, so you can really feel like you’re having an outdoor experience. If you haven’t got a back garden big enough, then get to your local park and have a big long lazy picnic, like the blogger Charli did at Greewich park in London.

Spring Cleaning

No not you! That’s not a holiday. Plan ahead and before your holiday get the professionals around to give the house a really good clean and tidy. Then get lots of fresh flowers and a large grocery delivery, so everything will be ready to go! Now ban yourself from doing any laundry or cleaning until your staycation is over.

Don’t Cook, Won’t Cook

One of the best things about being on holiday is eating out regularly and the food in general. So look around and endeavour to try at least three new restaurants for dinner and cafes for lunch. Also, order wine with lunch and everyone has to have ice cream! You’re on holiday remember.

If you need to be at home at night due to the children, then why not order takeaway every night instead? You can plan with the kids which takeaway for which night and the kids will love it! Even tho you’re still at home, you will still feel like you’re treating yourself and the family.

Get creative

Get online and buy something new to try for each day. This could be something for the kids to get messy with outside like painting, clay or crafts. Or if it’s the adults, find a class near you like pottery or a cookery class like chocolate making. Do that thing you’ve fancied doing for ages, but haven’t had the time.

Massage / Yoga

Take time our for yourself every day. Whether that is an hour of yoga or a hiring a massage therapist to come and visit you at your home. Just an hour on your own, with a bit of peace and quiet will make you feel much more relaxed at the end of the holiday.

Read

For many people, reading is a bit of a luxury only really achieved on holiday or a little bit before bed. So don’t’ let your staycation stop you from enjoying that book…
