However, for every down, there is an up, and some great things did happen this year. We were amazing at the Rio Olympics; Team GB returned home with 67 medals, 27 of which were gold! The Queen reached the ripe old age of 90, and proceeds from the globally popular, 2015 Ice Bucket Challenge funded significant breakthroughs in the treatment of ALS this year. So, let’s not dwell on the bad, rather let’s celebrate all the good in 2016.
This July, the sheep-shearing world record was broken in Cornwall. Matt Smith managed to de-fleece 731 sheep in only nine hours (beating the previous record of 721)! Wow! Imagine all the wonderful, woolly jumpers that came from all those fleeces!
Speaking of woolly jumpers, it’s been a great year for knitwear. Lots of fabulous celebrities have been spotted out and about, resplendent in some fantastic-looking knits.
The lovely, Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, treated us to some fashion gold this year, including this simple, yet seriously stylish ensemble. We love how she styled her colourful, silk scarf with her austere, grey, roll neck sweater. Why not have a go at recreating this look for yourself with our luxurious, yet affordable, pure cashmere Cowl Neck?
One of the nation’s favourite TV personalities, Dermott O’Leary, was spotted covering up in a classic, grey-hued, shawl collar cardigan. Teamed with his dark, timeless staples, Dermott looked incredibly handsome in this traditional knit. You can recreate Dermott’s dashing, cold-weather look with our 100% pure wool Chunky Shawl Collar Cardigan.
Talented, British actor, Colin Firth, nailed the notoriously difficult smart-casual dress code with his infallible combination of timeless, black roll neck and classic, grey blazer. We salute your impeccable style, Sir! Fancy looking this good at your next smart-casual do? A perennial polo neck jumper in either pure lambswool or pure cashmere is a great place to start.
Queen of the British Silver Screen, Dame Helen Mirren, has delighted us all year with her sassy and stylish take on accomplished dressing. She’s put together some cracking outfits. We still love how utterly stunning she looked last year in this 50s-inspired, red-carpet look! If you’ve got a formal event coming up, an everyday cardi is a great coverup shout. Our cashmere & merino Crew Neck Cardigan is available in a rainbow of beautiful shades.
Everyone’s favourite Cake Queen, Mary Berry, became something of a style icon this year. We all eagerly awaited her chic outfits each week on Great British Bake Off, including her fantastic knitwear choices. In honour of her new fashionista status, here she is in 2007 looking elegant and fresh in our cotton & silk Spot V Neck Cardigan. Long live, Queen Mary!
Which knitwear looks have struck a cord with you this year?
We hope all of our customers have had a very merry Christmas, and we wish you a fantastic 2017. Have fun!
