• Nordic Sweater

Most of the world’s famous sweaters have taken the names of the places from which they originated. The Nordic Style Sweater from Norway (a thinly populated country, famous for its icy lakes and breathtaking fjords) does not break this trend.

• Nordic Sweater History

Nordic sweaters have an interesting history. Originally, Nordic sweaters, like old-fashioned television sets, only came in black and white. These were the natural colours of the sheep’s fleece. Soon some adventurous people began mixing the black and white, and started stitching v-shaped patterns called ‘lice’, to help make their Nordic sweaters warmer. Patterns followed next, but only on the very top of the sweater, since Nordic people tucked them far down into baggy trousers. Fancier patterns evolved as people decided to combine function with fashion and wear their Nordic sweaters to social events such as church. They even added rosy colours and silver clasps (now usually pewter) for decoration.

Historically, Norwegian women used Nordic knitwear to capture a husband. They would knit their loved one a beautiful woollen Nordic sweater as a sign of affection. This would often result in a proposal for marriage from the more intelligent men!

• Nordic Knitwear Fashion

Nordic sweaters are now a piece of high fashion clothing. They are often seen in high class places such as London's Kings Road, New York's Fifth Avenue, and the après-ski slopes. In a bid to keep up with the times, manufacturers make short, dressy Nordic sweaters alongside the more traditional Norwegian sweaters. They are now made in synthetics and cotton, as well as the traditional wool.

A good quality wool Nordic sweater will cost between £75 ($120) and £150 ($250) in Oslo. Once out of Norway, the price can escalate to as much as £300 ($500) in places such as England and America. Before you jump on that flight to Oslo, take a look at the Woolovers high quality wool Nordic Style Sweater - it may save you a very long and expensive journey
