Lambswool Sweater
Sweater is an American word. It is derived from a knitted shirt or a heavy woollen jersey (so called because sailors from the Isle of Jersey wore them). It was adopted in the 1890s by American sportsmen, who wore them to keep warm. They would often perspire, hence the word ‘sweater’.
Originally, sweaters had a traditional high collar. In 1894, a polo collar was added for golfers. Cyclists also wore the sweater with the high collar.

Change of name
In the 1920s, the English started to call sweaters ‘jumpers’ and, in the 1930s, ‘pullovers’. It wasn't just the name that changed. A Sweater was traditionally a man's garment, mostly worn for country sports, but the jumper was an everyday item worn by both men and women.
